Where in northern virginia are some good civil war battlefields that i can use a metal detector?
If there are other goods sites that i could use a metal detector that would be great...
And do i need permission to use a metal detector in these places?

You must have permission from anyone who's land you expect to disturb. Trespassing is illegal.
No you can not use a metal detector in a civil war battlefield - Government owed property - you would need an act of Congress to dig.
Best idea is contact a local shop that sells metal detectors - see if they have a list of clubs, organizations etc. that have "digs" -
this would give you valuable learning experience and a list of rules/regulations of where and when you can use your metal detector.
Possibly they dig on large farms in Northern VA where armies have camped/skirmishes fought etc. These clubs/organizations/and stores that sell this equipment would have a lot of information for you. Look in the yellow pages for stores that sell metal detecting equipment and give them a call - maybe you can be put on a mailing list for upcoming organized hunts.
