why a firm in a perfect competitive market choose to set the price equal to the current market price?
Under perfect competition in equilibrium, economic profits are zero, and MC=P. If a firm chooses to set a price below current market price, it would mean that MC>P and the firm would operate at a loss. If it chooses to set a price above current market price, the competitors would take away all of its business. Either way, the firm couldn't stay in business for long. Only by setting the price equal to current market price will the firm maximize profits, and equilibrium will be maintained.
This is why a firm in perfect competition is called a price taker.
