Earth slips have caused havoc in the village of Bantitwatte in Kekunadura, Matara, due to heavy rains experienced during the past week. About one year and a half hectares of land, 40 meters long have been subject to land slips causing severe damage to roads, disrupting traffic and destroying crops of rice. Ellakanda reservoir and irrigation canal were built in 1870, located in the village, bringing 1,200 hectares of farmland rice.

An earthquake packing a magnitude of 6.0 struck off the Solomon Islands, two days after a 8.0 earthquake shook the region and generated a tsunami that killed at least 30 people. The last earthquake was shallow and has hit 139 km [86 miles] north-west of Gizo, which was destroyed by the tsunami killer 8.0, at 11:39 AM [0039 GMT], according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake is only 10km [6 miles] below the seabed, but no tsunami warning was generated.
The region does not been shaken by aftershocks were still measuring up to 6.7 in force since the earthquake and tsunami that struck two days ago.
Tsunami destroyed 13 villages [April 3, 2007]
Thirteen villages were destroyed when the tsunami generated by a large earthquake struck Solomon Islands, killing 28 people and leaving many more homeless.
